The bonfire of the vanities

the-bonfire-of-the-vanities

I might be late to this party and all of you probably already know and read The Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. But it's the literary equivalent of opening a tub of Pringles and I need to talk about it to make sure no one is missing out.

The novel was originally conceived as a serial (see: Charles Dickens' style). It ran in 27 installments in Rolling Stone starting in 1984. The title is a reference to the historical Bonfire of the Vanities, which happened in 1497 in Italy (Florence). The book's title is a reference to the vanities of New York society of the 1980s and the core of the book is about the lack of control anyone has over their lives regardless of their wealth, wisdom, or success.

I will classify The bonfire of the vanities as one of my guilty pleasures read. It has suspense, quick plot, obscure characters, glamourous lifestyles.
